What double degree does the LM in Civil Engineering in Genoa offer me?

The Laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria Civile course offers you a double degree programme aimed at obtaining the "Double Master Degree in Civil Engineering" (DMCE) in Italy and the "Diplôme d'Ingénieur de l'Ecole des Mines d'Alès - Infrastructures et Grands Ouvrages (IGO)" in France, by attending part of your university course at UniGe and part at EMA.

What are the characteristics of the partner institution?

The École Nationale Supérieure des Mines d'Alès, also known as IMT Mines Alès, École des Mines d'Alès or EMA, is a French academic institution founded in 1843 by royal decree and is one of the oldest engineering schools in France. École des Mines d'Alès has recently become part of the Institut Mines Telecom (IMT), which is the largest group of engineering schools in France. The school is a member of the French Écoles des Mines group (which includes other schools in Paris, Douai, Nantes, Saint-Étienne, Albi-Carmaux and Nancy) and the Conférence des Grandes Écoles. The main campus is located in the city of Alès, in the south of France, 1 hour from Montpellier and 5 hours from Genoa.

What is the difference between French Universities and Grandes Écoles?

The "Grandes Écoles", to which the EMA belongs, represent the French standard of excellence in scientific, engineering and administrative-economic education. In the engineering field, they confer the "diplôme d'ingénieur". The École des Mines d'Alès has 1,400 students, 20% of whom are international students from 45 countries, and has signed 90 international partnerships with foreign universities, including 30 double degree agreements. The French engineering school curriculum includes 2 years of theoretical "preparatory" classes held in a separate institution (CPGE: Classes Préparatoires aux Grandes Écoles), followed by 3 years of applied courses held in the actual engineering school. Unlike the 3+2 university course to which French universities also belong, the Ecoles course is 2+3 and recalls the structure of our previous five-year engineering degree which included a two-year theoretical course followed by a three-year applied course.

How is the educational path realized?

After completing the first year of the "Laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria Civile" (Master's Degree in Civil Engineering) in Genoa and acquiring the relative 48 ECTS, the proposed study plan foresees that UniGe students continue their studies by attending two academic years at Mines d'Alès and acquiring the relative 120 ECTS proposed by the host institution in the last two years of the curriculum in "Infrastrutture e Grandi Opere" (including the credits foreseen by the final degree project).
