The lecture's cycle is devoted to grow technical and professional skills of the "Deck officer" curriculum by covering the competencies concerned with the manoeuvrability and handling of ships in all conditions. The aim of the course is to raise a rational physical-based and practical awareness of the vessel's hydrodynamics in support to the decision making of a safe manoeuvre, in terms of knowledge, understanding and proficiency. During the course, a field trip at Genoa ports offers a final concrete insight into the planning and execution of berthing-unberthing operations discussed during the lectures. Through the learning path, the nowadays topic and relevance of the full-bridge simulation facilities for the manoeuvrability are experienced and discussed. The topics span from blue water navigation, to confined waters manoeuvring (canals and ports), considered the weather conditions and the management of tugs. The course is deployed according to the IMO requirements of the STCW Code, chapter II, section A-II/2 - Navigation at the Management Level.
