Ahmed G. Elkafas, PhD student at the University of Genoa, is the third runner-up in the TRA VISIONS 2024 - Young Researchers Competition, Waterborne category, thanks to his research idea: the hybrid integration of solid oxide fuel cells and internal combustion engines powered by clean fuels for coastal navigation vessels.
TRA VISIONS is part of the Transport Research Arena (TRA), Europe's largest research and technology conference on transport and mobility, and is Europe's leading competition for young transport researchers; it takes place every 2 years and awards the best PhD projects for the 5 transport modes (road, rail, water, air and cross-modality).
Ahmed G. Elkafas enrolled in the UniGe PhD programme in Marine Science and Technology (curriculum: Fluid Power Machines and Energy Systems for Maritime Applications) in January 2022. He is a member of the Thermochemical Power Group, a research group at the University of Genoa. His research interests include energy systems, energy efficiency, decarbonisation solutions, alternative fuels and renewable energy. His supervisors at the University of Genoa are Aristide F. Massardo and Massimo Rivarolo of the Department of Mechanical, Energy, Management and Transport Engineering - DIME.
