Body

The short course "Mass transport and sorption thermodynamics of low molecular weight compounds in polymers" consists of two lectures.

The first one is focused on sorption thermodynamics of low m.w. compounds in rubbery and glassy polymers. Several theoretical approaches dealing with rubbery polymers will be presented, focusing the attention on lattice fluid models and perturbative approaches. Then, suitable theoretical approaches will be presented to cope with peculiarities of sorption in out of equilibrium glassy polymers.

The second lecture deals with modeling of mass transport in rubbery and glassy polymers. In particular, mainly free-volume theories for diffusion in rubbery polymers and their extension to glassy polymers will be discussed.

Examples of several experimental approaches, including gravimetric, permeation and vibrational sectroscopy techniques, will be illustrated, both with reference to sorption thermodynamics and to mass transport.
